I think about what people do and how it defines them a lot. Talking with musicians about their music is a weekly thing for my job. And the people I work with also do a lot of interviews, and they think about this kind of stuff a lot too with topics ranging from farming to online dating “ its part of our own daily discussions. And beyond this constant flow of conversations about what people do, many of us are attending radio documentary production training. This type of interview is nothing like what I am used to doing for a standard interview, and it takes me into peoples homes and lives. I sit on their floors, bum their cigs and wake up their roommates¦ It has been a lot of fun listening to people speak about things they are passionate about; what they do.
Having a longish commute, it seemed impossible to not turn the questions on myself (internally, I didnt talk out loud to myself “ but if I do, Ill record it!) and wonder if its fair. Am I defined by my job? Is that what is left behind? I even almost found it inspiring and motivating at first “ an urge to work harder and do more.
?w?t?f?
All of this while racing home to see my family. When I get home, Duder hollers an excited Daddy!!! while running over for hugs (and Wifey smiles and patiently waits her turn ) “ its a wonderful thing. At that point, sitting for a couple hours to transcribe an interview couldnt be lower on my priority list.
I think Im still searching to find a balance between work and play. And sometimes I get them confused.
The stories Im searching for, and the life I myself lead, arent the do “ we arent what we do, its the why “ why we do what we do. Did you know that being a skater in roller derby can give the same kind of relief/release as opera singing? Neither did I And it totally made sense. The impact I felt hearing such powerful singing at such a close proximity was very similar to the rush of watching my first Bout. And see, even as I dismiss it, there I go talking about it again¦
P.S. I did all this with a missing O button. It matters to me!

Macedelic Studios: Along Came a Spider0

It was a typical good morning. Duder was slowly coming to full consciousness on the couch, Wifey the same. I had stumbled through a shower and made some sandwiches for lunch. I gathered up my things, said my goodbyes and gave a high five to the family though the screen of the window.
I would have been whistling if I could.
I noticed as I walked to the V-Dub that we had left both front windows open a couple inches, but it hadnt rained so it wasnt a big deal. I opened the door and in one quick, smooth motion sat in the drivers seat while putting my bag next to me and slamming the door shut. And as I did so I felt the stretch of a spiders web over my face. Quicker than thought, I closed my eyes “ but in my generally semi-conscious-pre-coffee-morning-self lazily finished sitting and THEN shouted in my mind **** **** **** I just sat into a fresh spiders web!!!! ***********.
I reluctantly opened my eyes and right up and to my left was the spider. Right there. I mean RIGHT there. My head gets nice and close to the roof of the wagon. She was red and black with light highlights all in pattern, long stretched legs and one of those big fat asses. The screaming in my mind escaped from my body and I freaked out (to be honest, to the point of embarrassing :p). I exploded profanities at such a high decibel rate that my wife become concerned for me from inside the house! During this outburst, I was trying to destroy the spider. She was fast and aware and escaped my initial jabs (after a brief, desperate failure to find something other than my hand to kill with) and ran under the visor. No way in hell was I going to pull that down while sitting below it, so I took this opportunity to open the door and jump out of the car.
But, this wasnt exactly in improvement; I HAD to deal with that spider. I chose the blue plastic cup off the radio antenna of our old car (dont ask) as my weapon and prepared to open the car, drop the visor and, to quote Mortal Kombat, FINISH HER!!!. And then a horrible thought crossed my mind: worse than having to face the spider, what if I couldnt find her¦ what if I had to drive the car to work, knowing she was somewhere in the car with me. Watching me. Smelling me. Thinking weird spider thoughts about how cool it is to have all those legs, eyes and hairs. OMFG.
I opened the door, dropped the visor and there she was. All big and red. Unafraid. And I got her with the bottom of the cup. The deed was done, the car was secure. I kissed the wife and son and drove off to work VERY awake.
I dont know much about spiders, but I wanted to find a picture of one that looked similar to share. For the record: Me doing a Google image search for spiders is a big deal. And holy crap, I would compare it to the brainwashing scene from A Clockwork Orange “ I had hundreds of images flow in front of my eyes. Some were pretty disturbing (spiders on skin especially, and the bites “ and even worse on faces!). It got to the point that I started to just laugh¦ maybe theres something to that exposure therapy B.S (a.k.a Flooding). The picture I used above is of a WI Red Spider. There was a time back in elementary school, when I was the kid who would pick up a spider that got in the classroom, carry it around to show the other kids, and then set it free outside. Not sure what ruined it for me.

Macedelic Studios: Yay Life: Washboards, Harmonicas & Grungies0

Not even a day after acquiring a new instrument a new duo project has formed. Well, its not a new project “ everything I do falls under The Lab Rats unless there is already a pre-conceived overall persona (aka The Cult of the Sunny Jims). But its a totally new thing, and I love it. Each time I started twiddling with a Washboard (with no thimbles yet¦) the Duder would grab one of his toy harmonicas and start to jam along. And more than just the inhale/exhale “ he slides it around and times his bursts. Its awesome. He did an excellent accompaniment of a Xavier Rudd song this afternoon too (damn I missed it, always record!).
I think part of why I am enjoying it so much, is it was so unexpected. I have definitely thought about what it would be like to take up an instrument like Washboard (especially after seeing The Brass Kings at the Mississippi River Festival). But I think it could just have easily been a Turn Table or Beat Box and I would be just as excited for something Ive been dreaming of.
There has been a lot of rhythm running around the house today. When Dude isnt grabbing a harmonica or pounding on the Djembe or Bongos, hes been getting in the habit of strumming the acoustic guitar in the corner. Not just banging on it and trying to break strings, but strumming and plucking. It was just the Dude and I for a while this morning/early afternoon and we both managed to need only one pair of grungies the entire day! (For the un-initiated grungies = undies). What has four thumbs and a certain level of bodily-function control? This father and son right here!!!
I should have known good things were coming¦I got the Washboards just after having the Bocce game of my life on a course that is equivalent to the Masters in golf (not some lame square, but flower beds and lawn decorations for sand-traps and bunkers). Followed by grilled steak and shrimp (I dont fear Gulf shrimp either, its so highly tested now its actually safer than outer-world shrimp) as a treat from our Aunt Neighbor. All this excitement and we havent even gone down to the drumkit and electric guitar in the basement yet this weekend. Boom Crash? he asks The perfect set-up for a football game to watch in the evening tomorrow. Yay life.

You never know whats coming at you next. One day you might have a foolproof theory about the best candidate for the County Sheriff election based solely on yard signs (least annoying + most handmade looking vs most annoying + mass produced looking). Then the next day that turns out to be entirely inaccurate and youre hoping for the opposite. There are no guarantees in this world, thats guaranteed!
With a negative chain of events, it seemed The Binary Boys were going to be on an extended hiatus due to failing technology requirements for audio capture and production. Then, from deep in the confines, an old mixer was found. One with twitchy and unreliable outputs for house speakers¦but a perfectly fine line output. Booya. We had our first trial run with it today with our fingers crossed that the line outputs actually worked, and they did “ beautifully!
For the first time EVER, The Binary Boys mic levels could be adjusted SEPARATELY, instead of one trying to shout as loud as the other talks (as you should know, neither of them are any good at whispering¦). Just look at all those knobs and faders. Of course, when The Binary Boys found out it wasnt actually an elaborate controller to operate the latest Mech Warrior game, they had little to no interest¦
But then, Lady Fate couldnt let everything turn out rosy. In the mix of mess of mess of mix to get things ready for a new studio recording/production setup (working around two of the crankiest game testers in the business) I forgot a simple 1/8³ to 1/4³ adapter. Something I normally have two or three of for no good reason. None. So while we enjoyed a better record display (mixer running through a laptop) we couldnt actually hear what was being recorded. So, if our review of Bayonetta in a few weeks blows, now you know why.
P.S. Speaking of which, doesnt Bayonetta look like the bad ass gamer-extreme version of Sarah Palin?I dont know, maybe Im all mixed up :p

Commentary courtesy of The Binary Boys:
Yes, thats meant as a slam. Granted, color television was the new big thing when it was first demonstrated by CBS back in the 1950²s, and at that point the equivalent of a video game was either Mr. Potato Head or Ant Farms. But there is no denying that the Nintendo Wii was not an advancement into the next generation of consoles. Were not breaking the news here, just re-stating the obvious.
The fine folks at Nintendo (where we hear they still have Mario Bros. themed Fridays) have announced that the Wii has now sold over 30 million units faster than any other console “ representing an immense expansion of the casual gamer market. A market that seems to have no appreciation for the constant evolution of graphics. And dont get us started on the overall game quality, Wii lacks there too; due in large part to the lower graphical requirements needed to develop a game.
This influx of casual gamers makes it feel like our studios were suddenly transported to the middle of Iowa¦
Cheap and simple, thats the trick to mass market appeal (¦wonder why we havent caught on yet¦), and the Wii delivers. Excuse us while we go SIT on the couch and use our THUMBS. And trigger fingers too.
Then again, there is Mario Kart¦
